1. Your body carries tension that does not release with rest.

You might notice chronic tightness in your neck, shoulders, jaw, or hips. This tension persists even when you are not consciously stressed. You wake up with it. It returns within hours of any relaxation you manage to create.

This reflects a sympathetic nervous system that stays partially active even during downtime. The muscles involved in your defense response do not receive the clear signal that the threat is over. They stay on guard.

2. You have physical symptoms with no clear medical cause.

Recurring headaches. Digestive problems like bloating, constipation, or diarrhea. Fatigue that does not improve with sleep. A racing heart at rest. Doctors run tests. Everything comes back normal. But the symptoms continue.

These are often nervous system symptoms. Your autonomic nervous system controls heart rate, digestion, immune function, and skin health. When it is dysregulated, these systems misbehave. The problem is not the organ. It is the regulatory system driving it.

Someone cuts you off in traffic. You feel rage out of proportion to the event. Your manager sends a neutral email. You read it as criticism and feel a spike of dread. A minor problem feels catastrophic.

This cycling between hyperarousal (too activated) and hypoarousal (shut down) is a classic dysregulation pattern. 7. You use constant stimulation to avoid stillness.

You cannot sit without your phone. You fill every gap with audio, video, or conversation. The idea of sitting quietly for 10 minutes without input feels genuinely uncomfortable, maybe anxiety provoking.

This is your nervous system using external stimulation to regulate itself. When your internal regulation system is impaired, external inputs become necessary to maintain a manageable state. The phone, the podcast, the background TV show is all regulation. This is not a personal weakness. It is a compensatory strategy for a system that has lost self regulatory capacity.

8. You have reduced tolerance for uncertainty.

You need to know outcomes in advance. Waiting for results feels unbearable. You overplan, overcheck, or overthink to reduce uncertainty. When plans change at the last minute, your reaction feels bigger than the situation warrants.
