Diego Pauel, certified breathwork facilitator and nervous system regulation specialist

I was stuck in fight-or-flight for years. Breathwork got me out.

Now I teach overwhelmed professionals the same techniques.

The moment everything changed

I was 27, sitting in a doctor's office, being told my cortisol levels were those of someone twice my age. My hands shook when I tried to hold a coffee cup. I hadn't slept more than four hours straight in months. And the worst part? I thought that was normal.

If you're reading this, you probably know the feeling. The racing thoughts at 3am. The jaw you unclench ten times a day. The way your body feels wired even when you're exhausted. I lived in that state for years, and I tried everything to escape it.

Meditation apps that told me to "just relax" (if I could relax, I wouldn't need the app). Therapy that gave me insight but not relief in the moment. Exercise that exhausted my body but left my nervous system screaming. I started to believe I was just built for stress, that some people are calm and I wasn't one of them.

Then I discovered something that changed everything in a single session.

During a freediving course in Thailand, I was taught a breathing technique to slow my heart rate before a deep dive. Within ninety seconds, something shifted. Not just in my mind, but in my body. My shoulders dropped. My jaw unclenched. The constant buzzing in my chest went quiet. For the first time in years, I felt genuinely safe.

That was not a coincidence. It was science. That breathing pattern activated my vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve in the body, and it told my nervous system: "You can stop fighting now." I had been stuck in a chronic sympathetic state, what scientists call dorsal vagal shutdown masked by sympathetic overdrive, and a simple breath pattern flipped the switch.

I went from surviving to studying

That experience started an obsession. I had to understand why it worked. So I trained. I got certified as a breathwork facilitator through the International Breathwork Foundation's accredited programs. I completed my AIDA freediving instructor certification, learning how elite freedivers control their autonomic nervous system under extreme pressure.

I studied polyvagal theory under practitioners trained by Dr. Stephen Porges, the neuroscientist who mapped how our vagus nerve determines whether we feel safe, stressed, or shut down. I trained in somatic experiencing, the body-based approach to trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine.

Every certification deepened the same conviction: you cannot think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. You have to breathe your way out.

If that last line resonated, your nervous system might be telling you something.

Then I started teaching it

First to friends who were burning out the same way I had been. Then to clients at my Breathflow Connection workshops in Koh Tao, Thailand. The results were immediate and hard to argue with:

  • Clients who hadn't slept through the night in years were sleeping 7+ hours within the first week
  • People with daily anxiety reported feeling noticeably calmer after a single session
  • Stressed professionals found they could down-regulate in under 5 minutes, anywhere, with no equipment

But there was a problem. Not everyone could fly to Thailand. Not everyone had time for a 2-hour workshop. The people who needed this most, the chronically overwhelmed, had the least time to get help.

That is why I created Nervous System Reset. The same techniques, distilled into 5-minute daily practices you can do at your desk, in your car, or lying in bed at 3am when the thoughts won't stop.

How I teach differently

Four principles that guide every program, technique, and recommendation in Nervous System Reset.

Simple, not complicated

Most wellness programs overwhelm you with information. I give you exactly what you need and nothing more. Five minutes a day. No complicated routines, no lifestyle overhauls, no equipment. If you can breathe, you can do this.

Science-backed, not trendy

Every technique is rooted in peer-reviewed nervous system science: polyvagal theory, vagal tone research, HRV studies. I don't teach breathwork because it's trending on social media. I teach it because decades of neuroscience research prove it changes how your autonomic nervous system responds to stress.

Practical, not perfect

You don't need to meditate for an hour or restructure your mornings. You need tools that work when you're overwhelmed, underslept, and can't step away from your desk. Stuck in traffic? These work. Middle of a panic spiral? These work. 3am and can't sleep? Especially then.

Body-first, not mind-first

You cannot think your way out of nervous system dysregulation. Your body needs to feel safe before your mind can quiet down. That's why breathwork and somatic practices work when affirmations, journaling, and positive thinking don't. We go through the body to reach the mind.
